Navigate The Holiday Feast

As our Thanksgiving weekend approaches here in Canada, I want to help you navigate the holiday feast so you stay on track. I’m sure you’re already stressing and wondering what you’ll be able to eat, who’s going to tell you “It’s just one day, enjoy it”, “life’s too short” and other things. While we deal with our own internal struggle with what to enjoy, we also have to navigate through the food pushers (those that say you’ll hurt their feelings if you don’t try it etc.).

You should be anticipating the joy of spending time with loved ones and enjoying a meal together. Shift your focus onto socializing and enjoying the people you’re with.

When you’re committed to living a healthier lifestyle, the holidays will bring anxiety and stress. So how do we balance the joy of the holiday with our health goals?  I’m going to give you a few quick and practical tips to help you navigate Thanksgiving while staying on track, enjoying yourself and not wanting to beat yourself up later.

Mindset Strategies to Navigate the Holiday Feast

The first step in approaching your Thanksgiving gatherings is adopting the right mindset. Instead of viewing it as a challenge, see it as an opportunity to reinforce your healthy habits. Prepare mentally by reminding yourself of your progress and your commitment to your health goals. Visualize yourself making wise food choices and enjoying the holiday without guilt. If you know the menu ahead of time, decide what you will eat and stick to your plan. Focus on nourishing foods and fill up on them.

Planning Your Thanksgiving Dinner

One way to ensure you stay on track during Thanksgiving is by planning your menu if you are cooking. Opt for keto-friendly recipes that are both nutritious and delicious. Consider roasted turkey, ham, cauliflower mash or cheesy cauliflower casserole, coleslaw or salads and a variety of roasted vegetables. There are lots of sugar free desserts you can make that are delicious! These options allow you to savour the traditional flavours of Thanksgiving without compromising your health goals. If you are a guest, bring a dish to share that fits your eating style and share it.

Mindful Eating During Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving dinner is not just about the food; it’s also about the people you are with and giving thanks. Enjoy the company of the people you are with, visit, catch up and relax. When it comes time to eat, you can practice mindful eating by slowing down and savouring each bite. Engage your senses – notice the aroma, texture, and flavours of the food. Imagine how this food is going to nourish and support your body to reach your health goals.

By being present, you’re less likely to overeat, as you’ll recognize your body’s signals of fullness. If you want to enjoy something that is not normally on your meal plan, just take 1 or 2 bites and leave the rest. I always find the first few bites taste the best and after that, while it still tastes good, it’s never as good as the first few bites. I would finish something just because I felt I should. If there is nothing you want, just say you’re stuffed and don’t have room for another bite!

Approaching Thanksgiving with a positive mindset and a well-thought-out plan empowers you to enjoy the holiday to the fullest while honouring your health goals.

Remember, it’s not about deprivation but about making conscious choices that align with your health goals. So, this Thanksgiving, enjoy your friends and family and yes, enjoy the food but make choices that keep you on your path to improved health and wellness. You’ll be thankful the next day when you wake up clear and feeling great!
